Walk21 secured funding from the Bernard van Leer Foundation to support the first steps into walking for toddlers with their carers, for carers with babies, and for women as they go through pregnancy, so their needs are better understood, valued and considered in future urban planning decisions.
The objectives of this short, focused research project were to:
- Evaluate the quality of the existing walking experience by toddlers and their carers and for carers with younger babies to identify their needs and concerns;
- Explore options for how these needs and concerns can influence the urban planning/street management process to improve walkability and access to services by walking;
- Identify potential resources, opportunities and/or needs for advocates to ensure that toddlers’ first steps and carers daily journeys are more supported in future transport planning decision making and management of streets.
